What equipment for the eventing rider?

Quel équipement pour le cavalier de concours complet ?
Eventing is often considered the equestrian triathlon.

Dressage, cross-country, and show jumping follow one another with the same horse.

So, how can you equip yourself effectively and comprehensively?

And above all, how can you combine performance, elegance, and safety in such a demanding discipline?

Different equipment for each event

The rider cannot simply rely on one outfit: their equipment must change depending on the discipline practised and the specific requirements of each event.

In dressage, elegance and precision dominate. The outfit remains classic: competition jacket, light-coloured breeches, boots, and helmet.

The goal? To present a harmonious and polished pair.

In show jumping, the outfit remains similar but allows for more freedom. The rider primarily seeks comfort and mobility to clear obstacles with precision.

In these two events, opting for an airbag makes perfect sense. You can choose a fitted cut, like the Airflex: discreet, close-fitting, entirely black, it integrates perfectly with the outfit without breaking the line.

But everything changes in cross-country.

Cross-country: absolute priority to safety

Cross-country is the most demanding event.

Varied terrain, speed, fixed obstacles... the risk is real, and equipment becomes strategic.

A certified helmet is, of course, essential.

It is accompanied by a mandatory protective vest.

But today, a major evolution is emerging: the airbag.

Why?

Because it protects areas that classic protections hardly cover: the cervical spine and the coccyx/sacrum area. In case of a fall, it deploys in ¼ of a second and absorbs a large part of the impact.

The rider's equipment: precision and functionality

The rider wears boots or paddock boots with half chaps to maintain stability and good contact.

Gloves help with precise hand movements. Spurs and a crop allow for refined aids.

The bib holder and medical card are also essential for cross-country, integrating the rider's information.

The horse's equipment: performance and protection

Its equipment also evolves according to the events.

In dressage: bridle or double bridle, dressage saddle, saddle pad, with an optional ear bonnet for comfort.

The objective is to promote lightness and precision.

In dressage, the horse's attire is distinguished by its simplicity and refinement, in accordance with the spirit of the discipline.

The equipment remains streamlined: a bridle or double bridle depending on the level, a suitable dressage saddle to promote a correct position, and a discreet saddle pad, usually plain and white.

An ear bonnet can be added to improve the horse's comfort and concentration, without altering the visual harmony of the ensemble.

The objective is to favor lightness, precision, and a neat presentation, without superfluous elements.

In cross-country, the equipment becomes more technical.

Boots, fetlock boots, and bell boots protect the limbs against obstacles. Studs ensure grip on varied terrain.

A breastplate stabilizes the saddle, and a martingale can help maintain control.

Equipment around the horse: anticipating every detail

Eventing is not limited to the arena. The entire organization around it matters.

The rider must plan for care equipment, grooming supplies, transport protections, but also what is needed to manage the horse's physical condition between events.

Hydration, recovery, comfort… Nothing should be left to chance.

The airbag: now essential in eventing

The airbag is now a real standard.

Why such an evolution? Because falls in cross-country can be unpredictable.

Even with an excellent level, there is no such thing as zero risk. And this is also the case in show jumping, and less frequently in dressage.

The airbag complements the protective vest by covering essential areas and limiting trauma.

Conclusion: performance and safety are one

Eventing is a demanding discipline where every detail counts.

The equipment of the rider, the horse, and all the surrounding gear form a coherent whole.
